Rohan Mathias spent his formative years between Valparai and the Nilgiris, graduating as School Captain from Laidlaw Memorial School in 1991. After completing his degree at Christian College, Bangalore, his deep love for the outdoors brought him back to the hills, where, at just 23, he founded Jungle Retreat in Bokkapuram — one of India’s early eco-conscious wilderness stays. The retreat was featured in both Lonely Planet and Rough Guide as a must-visit wildlife destination.
Over the years, Rohan has worked on natural history documentaries for the BBC, National Geographic, and Discovery Channel, and most recently served as Associate Producer for Nilgiris: A Shared Wilderness. Alongside his work as a naturalist, he consults for hospitality and wildlife tourism ventures, writes a wildlife column for Inside 43 magazine, and continues to help people find their place in the Nilgiris — both in landscape and in life.
